Are wax melts toxic? It’s one of those questions people Google when they love a beautiful smelling home but also want to know exactly what they’re bringing into it.
And honestly, it’s a fair question.
Wax melts are used in homes with children, pets, guests, open-plan living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens and every other room where real life happens. So it makes sense to want to know whether they’re safe, how to use them properly, and what to look for when buying them.
The short answer is: wax melts are not automatically “toxic” just because they are fragranced, but they do need to be used correctly, bought from a responsible seller, and treated like any other home fragrance product.
What are wax melts made from?
Wax melts are usually made from wax and fragrance oil. They are placed into a wax burner or electric warmer, where the wax gently melts and releases fragrance into the room.
At Chandlers, my wax melts are made using soy wax and carefully selected fragrance oils. They are hand-poured in small batches in Liverpool and are designed to give a strong, long-lasting scent throw without needing a flame directly on the wax itself.

So, are wax melts toxic?
When used properly, wax melts are a normal home fragrance product. The key is to buy from a business that provides clear safety information and follows the correct labelling requirements.
In the UK, wax melts should include CLP safety information. This tells you about allergens, safety warnings and how to handle the product responsibly.
That doesn’t mean wax melts are scary. It simply means they are fragranced products and should be treated properly, just like perfume, room spray, reed diffusers, cleaning products and other scented items around the home.
How to use wax melts safely
Here are my simple wax melt safety tips:
- Only use wax melts in a suitable wax burner or electric warmer.
- Never add water to your wax burner.
- Do not overfill the burner dish.
- Keep wax melts away from children and pets.
- Never leave a tealight burner unattended.
- Use 4-hour tealights only, unless your burner instructions say otherwise.
- Keep burners away from draughts, curtains and anything flammable.
- Stop using the wax once the scent has faded.

Are soy wax melts better?
Soy wax is a popular choice because it melts beautifully, holds fragrance well and gives a lovely smooth finish. It’s one of the reasons I use soy wax for my Chandlers snapbars.
For customers, the main thing is not just the type of wax, but whether the product is made properly, labelled correctly and used safely.
