Do wax melts evaporate?
One of the most common questions people ask when they start using wax melts is: do wax melts evaporate?
The short answer is no - the wax itself does not evaporate or disappear in the same way a candle burns down. When you use a wax melt, the fragrance oil inside the wax is gently released into the air as the wax warms up, but the wax itself stays in the well of your burner.
That is why, after using a wax melt, you will still be left with melted wax in your burner even when the scent has faded. The wax has not “run out” or vanished - the fragrance has simply been used up.
Why do wax melts stay in the burner?
Wax melts work differently to candles.
With a candle, the wax is used as fuel. The flame melts the wax, draws it up through the wick and burns it away. That is why a candle gets smaller the more you use it.
With a wax melt, there is no wick. The wax is warmed by a tea light burner or electric wax warmer, and the heat helps release the fragrance oil that has been blended into the wax. The wax melts into liquid, but it does not burn away.
So if you have ever looked at your burner and thought, “Why is the wax still there?” - that is completely normal.
What actually evaporates from a wax melt?
It is the fragrance oil that gradually releases into the air.
Sometimes, especially when a melt first starts warming, you may notice a light vapour or shimmer above the burner. This is usually the fragrance being released as the wax heats up. It does not mean the wax itself is disappearing.
Over time, the fragrance becomes weaker because the scented oil has already been released. The wax may still look the same in the dish, but it will no longer smell as strong.
How do you know when a wax melt is finished?
A wax melt is finished when it no longer gives off enough fragrance for you to enjoy.
There is no exact rule, because it depends on the scent, your burner, the size of your room, how long you melt for, and your own personal preference. Some people like to change their wax as soon as the fragrance softens. Others are happy to keep using it until the scent has almost completely gone.
As a simple guide, change your wax melt when:
- the scent has faded
- you can only smell it when standing right next to the burner
- the wax looks the same but no longer fragrances the room
- you are ready to switch to a different scent
If the wax is still in the burner but there is no fragrance left, that does not mean something has gone wrong. It just means the fragrance oil has done its job.
Do wax melts get smaller?
Wax melts may look slightly different after use, but they should not noticeably shrink or disappear in the same way a candle does.
The wax can sometimes look paler, darker, thinner, cloudy or slightly uneven after being melted and cooled again. This is normal and does not usually affect anything. The important thing is the scent throw - if the fragrance has faded, it is time to remove the wax and start again with a fresh piece.
How long should wax melts last?
How long a wax melt lasts depends on the fragrance, the amount of wax used, the type of burner and how hot the burner gets.
A stronger scent may seem powerful straight away, while a softer scent may release more gently. A very hot burner may throw fragrance quickly but use the scent faster, while a gentler warmer may release fragrance more slowly.
If you are using a Chandlers wax melt snapbar, I usually recommend snapping off 1-2 pieces and placing them into the well of your burner. Start with one piece if your burner is small or your room is smaller, then add another if you prefer a stronger scent.
Why has my wax melt stopped smelling?
If your wax melt has stopped smelling but there is still wax in the burner, it usually means the fragrance oil has already been released.
There are also a few other reasons you may stop noticing the scent:
- The fragrance has faded: this is the most common reason. The wax is still there, but the scent has been used up.
- You have gone nose blind: if you have been in the same room for a while, your nose can get used to the fragrance.
- The room is too large: a small amount of wax may not be enough for a bigger open-plan space.
- Your burner is too hot or too cool: burner temperature can affect how quickly fragrance is released.
- You need to change the wax: if you have melted it several times, it may simply be ready to replace.
A quick test is to leave the room for a little while and then come back in. If you can smell the fragrance again when you return, you may have just become used to it. If you still cannot smell much, it is probably time for fresh wax.
Can you keep reusing the same wax melt?
Yes, you can reuse the same wax melt until the fragrance has faded.
When the wax cools and hardens, you can leave it in the burner and melt it again next time. You do not need to remove it after every single use if there is still plenty of scent left.
However, once the wax no longer smells strong enough, it is time to remove it and add a fresh piece. Keeping unscented wax in the burner will not do anything useful - it will just melt and harden again without giving you the fragrance you want.
How to remove old wax from your burner
Always allow your burner to cool before removing wax.
There are a few ways people remove used wax, but the safest method is usually to gently warm the wax just enough to loosen it, then slide or wipe it out carefully. You can also let the wax fully melt, then soak it up with cotton pads or kitchen roll before wiping the dish clean.
Do not pour melted wax down the sink, as it can cool, harden and block your drains.
Also avoid scraping hard wax out of your burner with sharp objects. Scratching the burner can damage the surface and may create tiny cracks, which is not worth the risk.
How to clean your wax burner safely
Once the used wax has been removed, wipe the dish with kitchen roll or a soft cloth. Make sure the burner is fully cool before handling it properly.
If there is any residue left behind, gently wipe it away rather than scrubbing or scraping. Keeping your burner clean helps prevent old fragrance mixing with new scents and keeps your wax melt experience much nicer.
It is also a good habit to check your burner regularly for any signs of damage, especially cracks, chips or deep scratches. If your burner is damaged, stop using it.
Why is there still wax left but no smell?
This is the part that confuses a lot of people, but it is completely normal.
The wax is simply the carrier for the fragrance oil. Once the fragrance has been released, the wax remains behind. Think of it a bit like a teabag - once the flavour has been released into the water, the teabag is still there, but it has done its job.
Wax melts are the same. The wax does not need to disappear for the melt to be finished.
Do wax melts burn away?
No, wax melts do not burn away when used correctly.
They should be gently warmed, not burned directly. You should never place wax melts directly onto a flame, hob, pan or any surface they are not designed for. Wax melts should only be used in a suitable wax burner or electric wax warmer.
If you are using a tea light burner, always follow the safety instructions for your burner and use the correct size tea light. Never leave a lit burner unattended.
How to get the best from your wax melts
To get the best fragrance from your wax melts, use the right amount of wax for your burner and room size. Too little wax may not fragrance a larger space, but overfilling your burner is not safe either.
Here are a few simple tips:
- use a suitable wax burner or warmer
- start with 1-2 pieces of wax melt
- do not overfill the burner dish
- change the wax once the fragrance has faded
- clean out old wax before switching scents
- avoid scraping the burner
- never leave a lit burner unattended
So, do wax melts evaporate?
No - wax melts do not evaporate.
The fragrance oil inside the wax is released into the air as the wax warms, but the wax itself stays in your burner. Once the scent has faded, allow the wax to cool, remove it safely, clean your burner and add a fresh piece when you are ready for your next fragrance.
